Spring cleaning the craft room handmade business

Spring cleaning

yes it’s that time again ! Out with the old in with the new type thing and what a mess I have made. When did I get so much stuff anyone would think I was buying for a craft shop in fact its not a bad idea ! Then I will have some room to work. I would love a shop dreaming again.

Already spent a couple of days tidying so not looking too bad my craft room

Started off just packing away all my beads I no longer used from my bag charm designing days. Not sure when I last made any maybe a few years so why keep them? I think because it took me so long to collect them all every colour, shape, pearls, glass, plastic you name it I had it! Just didn’t want to give them up. They did great when I first started sold hundreds but it didn’t last very sad think I cried. So it’s taken me this long to except the fact I won’t be making anymore.

Big box of beads, charms, findings packed away

So more space needed for my little monkey making business. I have the smallest room in the house and with everything in it you can’t swing a cat Never mind a monkey. My peddle on the sewing machine kept getting lost in all the mess under the desk. I know I am very lucky to have a craft room lots of people don’t have the luxury. But I have found it difficult to get organised when I’m falling over everything.

shelves on top of desk
More storage idea putting shelves on top of desk not taking up space on floor

I must admit I’m not a tidy crafter so need room so today I thought let’s throw things out have room to sew my monkeys. But on looking things needed to be moved in better places so I can move from one to another on my chair and keep the flow. I have ikea desks that fit along two walls but the plug sockets are only at one end makes it difficult need extentions.

Printer on top of my sock draws

Best thing I evet bought was my WiFi printer as the lap top doesn’t need to be connected press print and your away. Only thing I will say wasting paper is a big thing for me or it takes to many sheets in at a time. End up with bins full of paper and card left over bits I can’t use. I do recycle the paper so thank goodness for recycle bins or any bins for that matter because I have a lots of rubbish.

The carpet I have down isn’t ideal all the cotton sticks to it so would love to change it for something cleanable perhaps cushion floor. But I need to find it first haha no it’s not that bad ! I have to get down on my hands and knees and find all the beads that got away when packing ! With monkeys it’s pins and needles that go a stray.

Little basket stop them pins going a stray

Turning out to be a bigger job than I thought this spring clean. So far I have wiped the desks moved some shelves filled two bin bags and a paper bag thrown lots of stuff out and still not finished. Have a big basket full of craft things need sorting, another box with craft fair things even though I move some in the loft. Box of felt, props for photos baskets and things. I have a set of draws full of socks, ribbon and other stuff, big box full of paint and brushes as I also paint pictures, printing set, canvases and frames. PHew lot to get through !

Nice clear space for wrapping

When I’m wrapping have no space to move it’s so frustrating I make a space then fill it up again. Do get my boxes flat pack but you do have to put them together.save boxes that I think I can use but take up space along with tissue paper, cellophane etc. I like to put my monkeys I sell in a bag or box  think it adds a nice touch and makes a lovely gift.

My old laptop keeps going 😊

So wish me luck still not finished and may still move things round a bit when I start  working.

Where and how to sell- handmade business

Selling handmade

When  I first started selling handmade.

I started selling my handmade on eBay my first item was a bag charm at the time. Sold secondhand ladies bags revamped ! As I was crafty decided to make bagcharms for them. Opened a shop it went really well at first but the fees for eBay and PayPal on top wasnt giving me a huge profit. But it is a good selling place. I know if I want anything always look on eBay.

Top handmade sites.

FoLksy and etsy….

Then I moved on to  Folksy a uk handmade site charge a small fee for listing and then take commission when sold. Etsy is the same based in the US. When searching for these Etsy always comes up tops big handmade site. So up to you what you choose. If you have lots of stock perhaps both ?  I will list below some others to check out. Anything you put on these you will need PayPal account for payments. I find you also need to share your items on social media  get people browsing your shop.

Social media

Facebook are very keen to promote for a charge now that can vary so if you want to boost your posts you can. Join groups like other pages.Facebook is a great platform but changes all the time.  Just love instagram you can have a business page or keep it personal open or private. You see all pictures from those you follow and leave a love or like they do the same if they follow back you can leave comments and I have lots of friends who craft from all over. Hash tags are great for reaching your Neesh. Twitter never really got my head round it ! You need to be constant  I find things get seen better if put on direct rather than sharing and hash tags are also important.  Pinterest is  a build up of boards of your favourite things pictures that you pin in your page. I find it’s better to share from my website if it’s a blog or share from instragram spread the word. I loved my first one my own little website called Sunnyteddys bagcharms. You need a ULR that you can buy sometimes get free your name of your website,  host to look after technical side if anything goes wrong. I was in contact with the maker in case I wasn’t  sure of something. I only started to have problems when I wanted to up grade and had to have a new website made costing a lot. Lost all my email contacts  and just totally went wrong so in the end gave it up.

Websites are a lot more modern now and up to date this one I have just for blogs at moment I did my self it is made with WordPress.org. Free site but have to pay for hosting. Yes I make Sock monkeys handmade Business

Yes I make sock monkeys

just in case you have no idea what they are as often people don’t ?

They are monkeys made out of socks not teddies monkeys they take me a while to make because I don’t want them to fall apart and I like them to look right ! This can be a problem if I don’t like what I make I have to redo my mistake. I never started out to be a monkey maker it just happened one day the first time I had a go to make one just for fun many years ago.  I first saw a sock monkey on Facebook  and thought I must have one of them love them. I did buy one but thought I had to make one can’t be that hard me being a crafty person. So. Found some socks I didn’t wear and set to having a go hand sewing to get an idea I looked on you tube and found a great tutorial on how to make a sock monkey. My first sock monkey was born then I was itching to make more it was fun. I didn’t make them to sell till a lot later was busy with my little bag charm business but kept showing odd ones on my Facebook page and people liked them. I found my self making more monkeys and less charms felt it was more me ! Loved making the charms but they was getting more complicated I was designing some lovely work but people didn’t want to pay high prices for something you hang on your bag. I had rented a office lovely space to do my work and it felt like a real job going to work every day was the best feeling being my own boss doing what I loved making things something I had always wanted To do.

These are some of my recent baby monkeys

Through no fault of my own I had to give up my space and move back home so decorated one of my bedrooms and made it my craft room. I started making more sock monkeys and did craft fairs people loved them. This will be my fourth year  making them but things have slowed down a lot now ! I was never been with out  orders but found the demand to much as I have got older but still making them Just at my own pace.  I have learned a lot about having my own business  not just my self taut making monkeys but everything  that goes with it !  I don’t think people understand  the hard work that goes  in to hand made the hours  staying up late so you didn’t let people down and then they let you down. Searching for supply’s for that special pair of socks someone had to have for there monkey. Pricing because you don’t want to charge to much but they just took two days to make and still haven’t done the tags. Taking photos getting the right shots so you can show your monkey fans. Hoping someone will buy but not when you haven’t any stock and lots of commissions. That all sounds strange but there’s only you can make them how you want them.

People start to think there’s something wrong with you hiding away in the house, Never going out except to the post office. Only having the monkeys to talk to it can send you mad. I don’t  just make monkeys  as you know if you have read my blogs. But just wish people will read this  and realise I don’t just make monkeys  and work hard at what I do. Please keep reading if you’re interested in knowing more about handmade Business it may help you if your planning to have one of your own .

17th Oct

I wanted to add something to this it’s sad to say but last few months I have hardly made any monkeys as other things have occupied my time. So monkeys have been put to one side but not for gotten. I have started selling second hand and vintage soft toys and plan to include my monkeys along side. Just means I can still make a living and still carry on with what I love doing . Still be lots of monkey adventures and fun so keep watching thank you .
